MARCH 17, 2025 – THE WEEK IN LONDON
Monday, an inspiration for Celine and Julie Go Boating, the ICA has a members-only screening of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes as part of its Rivette season. Happy Together and True Romance screen at the Prince Charles Cinema on 35mm. Akerman’s La Captive is on at NFT1 at the BFI Southbank. Regent Street Cinema’s Monday Matinée is Raoul Walsh’s The Roaring Twenties. The Garden Cinema has Jacques Demy’s Lola.
Tuesday, Brief Encounter is on 35mm at Prince Charles, as is The Long Goodbye, while The Searchers screens on 70mm (repeated on Thursday the 20th). Lynch’s The Straight Story is on 35mm at Cine Lumiere.
Wednesday, The Wedding Banquet, an update of the 1993 Ang Lee classic, opens BFI Flare 2025. Modern Times with live score opens the London Soundtrack Festival. The Kennington Bioscope brings a programme of early cinema ‘Antiquities’ at The Cinema Museum. Hotel Monterey and Hotel des Acacias screen as part of the ICA’s Akerman season. No Home Movie is at the BFI. The Prince Charles Ken Russell retrospective continues with The Music Lovers.
Thursday, Pink Palace presents John Huston’s Reflections in a Golden Eye in the Rio’s Ludski bar. Alps is at The Garden Cinema as part of its Greek New Wave season. Cine-real brings Apocalypse Now on 16mm to the Castle Cinema (and again on Wednesday 26th).
Friday, the ICA’s Off-Circuit programme presents Direct Action, a portrait of ZAD, a militant activist community based in the Loire-Atlantique department, with a Q&A with directors Ben Russell and Guillaume Cailleau. The Garden Cinema has Donkey Skin. Remembrance is at the Cinema Museum with a Q&A with screenwriter Hugh Stoddart.
Saturday, Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages screens with a live score by Autohaus at the Rio. Rear Window is on 35mm at the Prince Charles. The Institut Français has Almodovar’s The Flower of My Secret.
Sunday, the ICA screens Celine and Julie Go Boating on 35mm. Cine Lumiere has Mulholland Dr. with an introduction by Joana Granero, founder of Fashion & Cinema. The Prince Charles has Before Sunrise on 35mm. Jacquot de Nantes screens at The Garden Cinema with introduction by programmer Nathasha Orlando.
